Qiu Lingui
Wuping, China b.1991
Qiu Lingui (b. 1991, Wuping, Fujian Province, China) graduated from the Oil Painting Department of Hainan Normal University in 2013 and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Oil Painting at the Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts. His artistic practice spans painting and mixed media, continuously exploring the impact of the environment on the individual's body and mind through the experimental use of various materials. In his early career, Qiu focused on plein-air oil painting. Later, inspired by Van Gogh's works on paper, he shifted his creative approach towards mixed media on paper. He excels at combining fragmented images from daily life with various media using collage techniques, including oil paint, acrylic, resin, acid-free paper, gauze, sand, and more. Qiu strives to explore the artistic language of materials and express his personal emotions and ideas through diverse creative forms. His works often feature a black, white, and gray color scheme, conveying a sense of loneliness, alienation, and inner anxiety.
From 2018 to 2020, Qiu engaged in artistic residencies in coastal areas, incorporating local elements such as sand and rust into his works. After leaving the coast, his creative vocabulary shifted towards resin, fire, and dust, echoing the state of isolation and confinement. Regardless of the changes in creative style and media, his works consistently revolve around the core theme of "the relationship between humans and the environment." Qiu considers artistic creation as a process of inner monologue and reflection on life. Rather than pursuing an over-interpretation of his works, he hopes that viewers can resonate emotionally with them. He candidly states that creation is a form of self-healing for releasing emotions, forging ahead in solitude, soothing inner wounds with a broader artistic expression, and confronting life's perplexities. As a young artist still in development, Qiu navigates the boundaries between figuration and abstraction, tradition, and experimentation, capturing the changes in the environment with keen insight and experiencing the rich facets of life with full emotion, striving to find a spiritual belonging in the diverse and ever-changing forms of art.
