OLIVO BARBIERI

Alps - Geographies and People  2016.09.03 - 10.31

Matthew Liu Fine Arts is pleased to present Alps - Geographies and people, the Capri based Italian artist Olivo Barbieri’s first solo presentation at the gallery. The exhibition will be on view from September 3rd through October 31st, 2016, with an opening reception on Saturday, September 3rd from 4-7pm.

Olivo Barbieri is one of the most influential contemporary photographic artists. He is known for his innovative technique that allows him to capture macro landscape into miniatures, presenting the subtle yet abundant details and layers within. For his debut exhibition at the gallery, we will exhibit 9 selected works and 4 new works from the artist’s well-known 2012 series Alps-Geographies and people. As the artist states, “the subject of ‘Alps-Geographies and people’ presents how the mountain is perceived from the climbers’ point of view-it’s peaks and precipices, the mirages and hallucinations in its geography. In these images, everything is true. The proportion and the forms are real. Even the people and the positions they're in…those, too, are real.”

Born in 1954 in Capri, Italy, Olivo Barbieri was graduated from the University of Bologna and has been developing his career as a photographic artist since 1971. Muniz has actively exhibited his works in various prestigious institutions, including Yancy Richardson Gallery, New York, United States; International Center of Photography (ICP), New York, United States; Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Trento and Rovereto, Rovereto, Italy; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, United States; Bund 18, Shanghai, China; and he has participated in Venice Biennale in 1993, 1995, 1997, 2011 and 2013. Barbieri’s work can be found in permanent collection of Canadian Center for Architecture (CCA), Montreal, Canada; San Francesco Museum of Art, San Francesco, United States; International Center of Photography (ICP), New York, United States; The Museum of Fine Arts, Huston, United States. The artist currently lives and works in Capri, Italy.
